In the Tao Te Ching, there is a line:
“Misfortune is where fortune lies; fortune is where misfortune hides.”
If you can truly comprehend this sentence and live it out, then your life would no longer be what it is now.
Nevertheless, very few people can truly receive the message conveyed by this sentence. Most people think that fortune and misfortune are about luck, about random events. But that is completely wrong.
Today, we will explain clearly this line: “misfortune is what fortune lies; fortune is where misfortune hides.” And we will also tell you how to apply it.
Still the same sentence—if you have a certain level of wisdom and blessing, then this piece of content alone may be enough to change your life.
Alright, what this sentence actually means is: when a person chooses fortune, the Tao might give them misfortune; when a person chooses misfortune, the Tao might give them fortune.
If this is not how you understand it, then it means you have not attuned yourself to Laozi, nor have you attuned yourself to the Tao.
Think about it: why is it that some people desperately seek fortune, yet end up bringing misfortune upon themselves? While others seem to suffer losses and go through misfortune, but later encounter the greatest turning point and blessings in life?
Why?
The mechanism behind this can be summed up in one word: frequency.
Remember, every choice you make is actually sending a signal to the Tao—that is, placing an order.
What do ordinary people usually look at when making choices? They look at benefits and gains or losses—whether there are tangible advantages now or in the future, right?
When you think you’ve chosen a so-called “fortune”—for example, you made money, secured an ideal job, won a lawsuit, or succeeded in negotiating a price—these are all considered “fortune” in our dualistic, worldly system of measurement.
You often think this is the result of your own effort, right? Or your own luck and blessings.
But that’s not correct.
At the level of the Tao, it does not look at what result you obtained. The Tao recognizes only one thing: the energetic frequency of your life consciousness behind that choice at the moment you made it.
In other words, what kind of life frequency did you base your choice on? Was it based on the greed of the ego? Or fear of the future? Was it based on a sense of lack? Or anger, resentment, grievance, doubt, and so on?
Whenever you make any choice, the energetic frequency your life is in at that moment is the only signal you send to the Tao.
In fact, you truly don’t realize that every choice you are making—even the smallest possible choice—is sending a signal to the Tao, that is, placing an order to the universe.
If you obtained a good result—that is, you successfully chose a so-called “fortune,” such as gaining money, fame, status, relationships, or health at the worldly level—
But at the level of the Tao, if the signal you sent was greed, lack, fear, resentment, doubt, anger—these very low-frequency signals—
Then once the Tao receives this order from you, it will not continue giving you things based on what you got. It will only match outcomes of the same frequency as what you sent.
Remember what we discussed before? All the countless outcomes that belong to you have already occurred in countless parallel universes, waiting for you to match with them.
A frequency of greed matches with loss.
A frequency of lack matches with insufficiency.
A frequency of fear matches with danger.
A frequency of anger matches with conflict.
These are the orders you place to the Tao every day.
You see, the Tao is impartial. It only operates on one word: resonance.
Whatever frequency you emit, it will match you with outcomes of the same frequency.
You think you are striving for benefit. You think you are choosing fortune. But because you took something in greed, or let go of something in fear—sorry, this is what humans call choosing fortune.
But as Laozi said: “fortune is where misfortune lies.”
At the same time, you have placed an order for misfortune with the Tao.
Every “fortune” you take while in a low-frequency state is secretly planting a corresponding “misfortune” for yourself.
But this is not Heaven punishing you. It is your own frequency that leads you to that inevitable outcome.
This is “humans choose fortune, but Heaven chooses misfortune.” This is what Laozi meant.
Do you see now? Is destiny written by yourself? What does it have to do with Heaven? It is all your own choices.
This is what Laozi meant by “reversal is the movement of the Tao.”
You think you are seeking fortune, but you are actually planting misfortune. You take something in greed, thinking it is fortune—but in the eyes of the Tao, what you sent is a signal of lack.
So at the moment you made that choice, the Tao already initiated a corresponding outcome aligned with that frequency.
This outcome may not manifest immediately, but it has already been arranged in your future life script. It will definitely manifest one day in your life.
So the money, fame, security, relationships you gain now—these so-called fortunes—may all be bait. Because in the future, you may lose more elsewhere, or pay a greater price.
This is not punishment. This is simply the inevitability of frequency resonance.
Similarly, let’s look at another situation.
If, when facing a choice, your ego’s greed, fear, jealousy, resentment arise—and at that moment, you make a transcendent choice—
You face your greed and choose to let go.
You face your fear and choose to allow and accept.
Then at the worldly level, within this system of judgment, haven’t you chosen a so-called “misfortune”?
That’s right.
For example, you give up money you shouldn’t take, leave someone you shouldn’t keep, accept grievances you cannot accept.
Although at the human level you chose “misfortune,” what signal does the Tao receive?
The Tao receives your transcendence over low-frequency states of the ego. It receives your freedom from being controlled by impulse. It receives your inner completeness and certainty.
These are very high-frequency signals.
So the Tao will immediately respond with an outcome of equally high frequency.
This outcome may not manifest immediately, but it will certainly be arranged in your future life script.
It may be an unexpected opportunity, help from benefactors, healing of body and mind, or abundance at a higher dimension.
Who knows?
But it will definitely manifest one day.
This is “misfortune is where fortune lies.”
You may appear to suffer loss in the human world, but in fact, you are placing an order for true blessings in the universe.
This is why many true practitioners seem to take losses and let go of attachments again and again, yet their path becomes broader and broader—because they understand the rules of the Tao.
So next time you go to a temple, don’t ask when you will gain promotion or wealth. Just ask yourself: does the frequency I am emitting right now match that wealth?
If your intention is to benefit all beings—we didn’t say “benefiting others” while excluding yourself. You are also part of all beings.
Is your own awakening and fulfillment not also benefiting yourself? And ultimately, isn’t benefiting yourself for the sake of better benefiting others?
Do you understand this logic?
So we only say: benefit all beings.
If your intention is to benefit all beings, to act from love and compassion—then even if in the human world you choose a so-called “misfortune,” such as letting go of greed or rejecting unethical gains—
The Tao will certainly choose a great blessing for you and reflect it into your life script.
This blessing may not be immediate money, but it will nourish the essence of your life energy.
This is the meaning of that line in the Tao Te Ching.
Alright—does it end here?
No.
Next, we’ll give you practical methods and steps.
From now on, when you face major life decisions or emotional fluctuations, follow these three steps:
First: pause and observe.
Don’t rush to decide. Ask yourself: am I choosing this out of fear or out of love? Out of lack or abundance? You must see clearly.
If you detect that it’s driven by fear—fear of loss, fear of being hurt—remember, that is just your lower self operating.
Second: shift your frequency.
Try to change your intention from “what can I gain?” to “what can I contribute?” From “I fear losing” to “I am already whole.”
Even if your actions still aim to pursue benefits, your inner state should be flowing, open, non-attached. Your intention should be to benefit all beings. Remember that.
Third: completely trust the Tao.
Once you confirm your frequency is high and transcends the ego, then choose boldly. Don’t doubt.
Even if it looks like a loss in front of you, don’t be afraid. Let go in the face of greed. Take action in the face of fear.
What supports you will always be love and compassion.
You must trust that the Tao—the greatest universal “server”—will never mistreat any high-frequency signal it receives.
What it returns to you will be far greater than what you see in front of you.
Finally, let me emphasize again:
Fate is not predicted; fortune is not told — it is tuned.
So we must cultivate reverence. Every thought and every choice you make is placing an order with the universe.
Ask yourself: do you want to order a script that looks like fortune but hides misfortune? Or one that looks like misfortune but hides fortune?
The remote control has always been in your hands.
From today on, don’t just focus on gains and losses in front of you. Focus on your intention. Focus on your frequency.
When you learn to place orders from the perspective of the Tao, you will realize that true blessings never need to be chased or forced.
They will naturally flow into your life along with your frequency.
So the core of life lies in two words: tuning frequency.
And the essence of practice is tuning the frequency of your life consciousness.
